Our hotel in Chicago is the newly renovated Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown, at 40 East Grand Ave. All rooms are 340 sq. ft. suites with separate living and sleeping areas, two 27-inch LCD flat-screen TVs, a galley kitchen, King Beds, free WIFI, and free hot full breakfast & complimentary evening social Monday through Thursday. Parking is not included. Stay at the Convention Hotel and get the most out of every moment of the short span of time we get to spend with each other every year.
I hope you’re as excited as we are. We’re tying up loose ends and getting things ready for this year’s Convention. We have some great tours and lots of fun to pack into our August 2017 Convention.
August 24, Thursday:
Arrivals and Registration. Sign-up by 4PM for 6PM PIZZA SOIREE hosted by Michael Emrick.
August 25, Friday:
9A – 1P: Frank Lloyd Wright bus tour – . Our private coach will meet us at the hotel for a four-hour bus tour (9 AM – 1 PM). We will be immersed in FLW from downtown Chicago to Oak Park. It will include a walk along Forrest Ave. and admission to the FLW house and studio. This is a tour not to be missed.
The afternoon of Friday will be free time. The Magnificent Mile is two blocks away. The Navy Pier is right down the block. Millennium Park, the Loop. It’s all there for you to explore. Visit the souvenir and antique shops. Be sure to stop in at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Book Store.
Evening: Member Reception – Annual Show & Tell, Short History of Chicago talk, wear your best (or funkiest) building-themed clothing, jewelry, accessories, etc.
August 26, Saturday:
9:30 – 11:00: Architectural Boat Tour – Grab breakfast early. We’re taking the first boat of the day up the Chicago River. We’ll see more than 50 buildings along the Chicago River. Join the morning cruise and enjoy the cool breezes and the cooler buildings .
Mid-day: This year we’ll have a late morning Business Meeting and Swap Meet. The spirit of Bob Kneisel will be with us this year with a curated selection from his vast collection at the Swap Meet and a few prime pieces up for auction at the banquet.
Evening: Our Saturday night Banquet – complete with Raffle and Auction and this year’s Convention Souvenir – will take place at an off-site venue. Stay tuned for more details.
August 27, Sunday:
AM: Walking Tour of Dearborn St., Chicago architectural history from old to new.
AM: Randolph Street Market Festival and Antique Market at your leisure.
