CHICAGO: MY (SBCS) KIND OF TOWN: Buildings, Buildings, Buildings!

We hope you are singing along with Frank, who also wrote the lyrics to MY KIND OF TOWN (CHICAGO IS)

“ Chicago is Tuggin’ my sleeve / Chicago is / The Wrigley building / Chicago is / The union stockyard / Chicago is / One town that won’t let you down / It’s my kind of town”

We are getting so close to SBCS 2017 Chicago convention. Michael and I are in high gear. We’re printing and packing and checking our lists. The tours have filled up, the schedule is being finalized. Little buildings are being wrapped and put into boxes.  Which ones will you bring?  Which ones will you take home?  Here are three buildings from the Kneisel Collection that some lucky person will take home.

Members will begin arriving on Wednesday. We’re in the Wednesday group! We’ll look for the rest of you at breakfast on Thursday.

Don’t forget that on Thursday Michael is organizing a Chicago Pizza night in the neighborhood. He’s going to pick a spot, reserve some space, and drag you early birds out for dinner.

Also on Thursday: Carol Detweiler and Joe Kopitz are planning to go to the Palmer House in the  afternoon for the “History is Hot” lecture and tour and you’re all invited to join in. https://www.lockwoodrestaurant.com/events/history-is-hott/. Reach out to Carol or Joe for more information.

Business Meeting!

Every year at the Convention we have a Business Meeting where we talk about and decide upon policies and actions that affect SBCS. One of the things we do at these meetings is to choose the next year’s President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Chair, and Newsletter Chair. Sometimes the members filling these volunteer positions offer to stand for another term, or other members are elected (or drafted) to fill these positions.

Joe Kopitz, SBCS President

Joe Kopitz, President of SBCS for the last five years has notified the Executive Committee that he will not be seeking re-election this year. On behalf of all of the members of SBCS, Michael and I want to offer our thanks for the great job Joe has done.

Lets all give Joe a Thumbs Up for the great job he’s done.

This means that this year’s business meeting will be more important than ever. We will be picking the next president of SBCS. On behalf of the Committee we ask you to consider running or nominating someone for this or any of the other  Executive positions. Please give this some thought between now and Chicago!

Get there early and grab your seats!

CHICAGO 2017: You can “Bank on It!”, August 25 – 27

2nd Ward Savings Bank, Chicago, IL (Rehberger)

Souvenir Building Collectors’ collections focus on souvenir or miniature buildings. However, many of these small treasures are also utilitarian – banks, bookends, tape measures, ink wells, paper weights, salt and pepper shakers – therefore the SBCSociety has a number of cross-collecting members.

On Saturday, August 26, during the 2017 SBCS Convention at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown, many different varieties of souvenir building will be up for sale through the SWAP MEET or AUCTION or RAFFLE.

These are some of the banks from the Kneisel Collection that will be available in the various venues.

SBCS Chicago 2017: Places to Go, Sights to See!

Peripatic traveller and souvenir building enthusiast, David Savanyu, reminds us that there are lots of interesting things to see and do around Chicago this August. Filling the days surrounding the SBCS Convention is easy.  Given the various Frank Lloyd Wright special exhibits (150th Birthday anniversary) around the country this year those exhibits near Chicago for this mighty midwesterner are appealing.  The SBCS Convention has a scheduled 4-hour Frank Lloyd Wright tour visiting sites in Illinois from downtown Chicago to Oak Park.  David also recommends sites in  the neighboring state of Wisconsin, all within driving distance and some with free reservations.

Taliesin East, Spring Green, WI

Monona Terrace, Madison, WI

David also suggests visiting Farnsworth House  (Mies van der Rohe, German/American architect), in Plano, IL

If you collect miniature buildings – not for the architects – but for what they hold or represent – here are some other sites to check out during your Chicago visit as represented by  Kneisel Collection pieces that will be available at the Convention – Shop & Swap, Raffle, or Auction.

SBCS CHICAGO 2017: Early Registration Deadline July 10!

2017 SBCS Convention City – Chicago

Chicago 2017 – 52 Days and Counting!
I hope you’re as excited as we are about the Convention. Our Canadian members just celebrated Canada Day July 1, and it’s July 4th for most of the rest of us… our apologies to The Netherlands! August 25th will be here before you know it, and we will be in Chicago, the windy city.
Ya know, Windy City is not about the breeze coming off Lake Michigan. It’s what New Yorkers thought about the non-stop speaking of the Chicago delegation in NYC who were determined to convince the World’s Fair Committee that they were the right city to celebrate the Columbian Exposition. They didn’t stop talking until they won that honor, earning them the nickname Windy City, and creating the White City in 1893.

History of Chicago & Sunday Walking Tour
Chicago native Joan Kane will be at the convention this year. At our Friday night reception Joan will deliver a short talk about the History of Chicago.
On Sunday Joan will lead an early-morning walking tour along Dearborn St. where we will see an architectural history of Chicago, from old to new!
FUN FACT – Grant Park is built on cinders of the 1871 Great Fire of Chicago.

Registration: Early Registration Deadline is July 10!
Fellow SBCS’ers. It’s time to register. In fact, let’s sweeten the pot.
If you have your registration and payment in to Katharine by July 10, not only will you skip the late fee, we will enter all of your names into a draw for one of three Early Bird Prizes! Yes… Prizes! We like that.

The Frank Lloyd Wright bus tour is going to be amazing. No other way to describe it. Three hours of FLW – what else could you ask for? To book this private bus tour we had to promise a minimum of 25 bums in seats, so be sure to sign up for a seat on this fabulous FLW adventure.

Saturday’s Swap and Shop
This past week, the Bob Kneisel Collection Committee sent Michael and I a list of all the Kneisel buildings and monuments that are going to be in Chicago for the Swap Meet and the Auction. Yow! We want them all. Be sure you are in the room when these are unleashed. Here are a few examples.

SBCS August Convention Update from Mark

Last weekend Amy and I went to Chicago to check out the hotel, nail down the tours, and have some great Chicago fun. We were knocked out by how beautiful and luxurious our convention hotel is.
When they say “newly renovated”, they are not kidding.
Sitting in the “cafe” end of the lobby where we’ll be eating breakfast together, we marvelled at the fabulous view of Chicago skyline. Step outside and you’re in the midst of the North Loop, surrounded by beautiful buildings and fabulous restaurants… a short walk from the river where we’ll start Saturday’s architectural boat tour.

We racked up the steps as we explored the city yet again.
In the Hyde Park area, on the South Side, we visited the Museum of Science and Industry and ate at Valois, a huge cafeteria and one of Obama’s favorites.
In North Chicago we went to two antique malls on N. Broadway and walked away with some beautiful finds, including a 9″ lead Havoline Tower and a handful of Banthrico banks. I was amazed at the number of buildings we saw in only two small malls. We’re pretty excited about the Randolph St. Market.

There are about 60 days left before our Chicago Convention.  Please fill out the registration form and get it in the mail. Registration Fees increase on July 10.  July 31 is the cut-off date for Our SBCS Member Special rates at the Hilton Homewood Suites, Chicago.  Book your room now through the link on the Convention Registration Form.

More details to come.  Prizes, Awards, party game….. SEE YOU IN CHICAGO!

SBCS 2017 Convention Hotel: A Suite Deal

2017 SBCS Convention City – Chicago

HOTEL BOOKING INFORMATION

In 1999 the SBCS convention was in Chicago. We paid $154.00 per night at the convention hotel. In 2017, eighteen years later, we have negotiated a rate at a suites hotel in the shadow of the Wrigley Building, for a mere $174 per night.

Our hotel in Chicago is the newly renovated Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown, at 40 East Grand Ave. All rooms are 340 sq. ft. suites with separate living and sleeping areas, two 27-inch LCD flat-screen TVs, a galley kitchen, King Beds, free WIFI, and free hot full breakfast & complimentary evening social Monday through Thursday.

When we book the Convention Hotel we promise to take a fixed number of room nights. When we all stay at the Convention Hotel we maximize the time we have to visit and socialize. This is why it is so important to all stay at the same place. If we don’t meet the promised room nights, SBCS has to pay the difference. So, lets all commit to stay at the Convention Hotel and get the most out of every moment of the short span of time we get to spend with each other every year.

Like NYC, parking in downtown Chicago is not cheap. We are researching some alternatives.

Souvenir Building Collectors Society members can book their hotel rooms starting April 1.

Click here for the members-only information and hotel link.

Souvenir Building Collectors to Meet Aug 25 – 27, 2017 in Chicago

Our hotel in Chicago is in the shadow of the Tribune Tower and the Wrigley Buildings, an easy walk to Michigan Ave. and the Navy Pier, just across the river from the Loop, Millennium Park (the Bean), the Chicago Art Institute, and all the other wonderful buildings and museums and galleries and stores.

Tell your friends, spread the news, Chicago 2017 is going to be an exciting time.
We want to bring new faces to the convention this year. Reach out to any collectors you know or run into. Recruit them as members and first-time conventioneers at SBCS 2017 – Chicago!

WATCH FOR YOUR APRIL EDITION of The Journal of the Souvenir Building Collectors Society for further details.
